Philadelphia 76ers vs. Indiana Pacers News and Notes
The 76ers have been looking like a team hungry for a run lately. Philadelphia has won five of their past six also seven of nine and looks to end January with their 11th win of the month. Much of the Sixers’ success must be attributed to their big man in the middle.
Joel Embiid has been putting up MVP number despite battling back issues much of the year. Philly’s big man, who was already dealing with tightness, took a scary fall this week in a win over the Lakers and was questionable for Friday against Minnesota. Embiid played through the pain and ended up eating the Timberwolves’ breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The 2014 third overall pick put up a nasty line of a game-high 37 points, 11 boards, and three assists in Philly’s 24-point victory. He is again listed as questionable ahead of the Pacers game. The 76ers had five players score in double-digits, with Tobias Harris leading the secondary scorers putting up 17 points while adding 11 rebounds.
Philadelphia is now seventh in the league scoring 114 points a game and eighth with 46.1 boards per game. The Sixers are doing this while also one of the better defenses in the league. Philly is holding opponents to the fourth-lowest field percentage in the NBA while a top-ten team in points against.
The Pacers seem to be trying to find their way since the multi-team James Harden deal that saw them ship out energetic guard Victor Oladipo. Indiana is 4-4 since the trade and got a bit of a raw deal coming out of it. Caris LeVert was the principal piece coming back to the Pacers, but the medical revealed LeVert had a mass on his kidney. While the trade went through with Indiana still wanting the former Net longer-term, he has yet to suit up for the team and remains out indefinitely.
So Indiana has been playing a bit short-handed with no All-Star in Oldadipo and no LeVert. Domantas Sabonis has been doing his best to pick up the slack. The Pacers big man just saw his ridiculous franchise-record 16-game double-double streak come to an end in Monday’s 15-point win over Toronto. It’s unfortunate as it looked like the streak could continue with the forward putting up 11 points and three boards in his first ten minutes. Sabonis and Raptor’s guard Kyle Lowry banged knees, and the Pacers franchise player had to leave the game with an injury.
So what did the son of Arvydas go out and do? He shook off the bruised knee and got back out there for the Pacers’ next game two days later to start a new streak in style. Sabonis carved up the Hornets for 22 points, 11 boards, and ten assists for his first triple-double of the season and sixth of his career in the 116-106 win. Although the Pacers dropped the rematch in Charlotte, Sabonis put up 22 points and 11 rebounds in the three-point loss. The new streak is at two games and counting.
The Sixers have hit the over in eight of their past nine as the favorite, while the over is 5-1 in Indiana’s past six following a loss. Philadelphia has failed to cover in their last four against Indiana while they’ve gone below the number in eight of their past ten head-to-head meetings.
