Philadelphia 76ers vs. Orlando Magic News and Notes
The Magic are off to a hot start, with wins against the Heat, Wizards and Thunder. They now face a tough Philadelphia 76ers team, led by Ben Simmons, Tobias Harris and Joel Embiid. Last season, Philadelphia limited opponents to 108.4 points per game, the fifth least. However, starting this season, the Magic have picked up the pace, playing the fifth fastest with an average of 104.5 possessions per game and scoring 120.4 points per game.
Aaron Gordon will likely have his minutes limited as he continues to deal with a lingering hamstring injury, playing 24.5 minutes this season. Markelle Fultz and Terrence Ross look to be the primary playmakers, leading the team with a 27% and 25% usage rate. Ross also leads the team in scoring, averaging 21 points per game. Center Nikola Vucevic continues to be a dominating force in the frontcourt, averaging 31 minutes, 20 points, 11.5 rebounds, four assists and a 24.5% usage rate.
76ers center Joel Embiid is probable to play, dealing with back tightness. He is leading the team in scoring and rebounds, averaging 28.3 points and 13.3 rebounds per game. The rotation seems to be solidifying around Embiid and Harris, who led the team in usage rate at 31% and 22%, respectively. Ben Simmons, Shake Milton and Seth Curry round out the rotation in terms of minutes, all playing above 25 minutes per game.

The public is backing the 76ers to cover with 51% of bets, while backing the Magic moneyline with 95% of bets. The SportsGrid Betting Model is leaning toward the Magic running away with the game, giving them a 70% chance to win. The model also rates the Orlando moneyline and spread as a five-star rating. Interestingly, the model gives the over a five-star rating, given that both teams played at a slower pace compared to the rest of the league last season.
The 76ers were 10-20 when favorited by more than three points last season, covering 50% of the time. As a road favorite, they ranked 25th, playing in 19 games and posting a 9-10 record and covering the spread five times.
As a three-point underdog, the Magic have a 1-8 record, covering the spread only once. When at home and as an underdog, the Magic posted a 2-11 record, covering the spread twice.
Look for the Magic to continue to keep up the pace against the 76ers in what looks to be a New Year’s Eve shootout.
