PHOENIX SUNS VS. DENVER NUGGETS NEWS AND NOTES
The Suns were one of the biggest surprises during the Orlando bubble, posting a perfect 8-0 record during the seeding games. That wasn’t enough to get them into the playoffs, but it did create plenty of optimism for the squad entering this season. The fact that they added Chris Paul during the offseason only amplified the buzz surrounding this squad.
They’ve been able to live up to expectations so far, winning four of their first five games, and Paul hasn’t even played that well. He’s shot just 38.2% from the field and 31.3% from 3-point range, both of which are well below his career averages. Paul is due for some positive regression moving forward, so this team has the potential to be even better.
Paul isn’t the same player that he was in this prime, but he’s still one of the most impactful players in the league on a per-minute basis. The Thunder increased their Net Rating by +13.8 points per 100 possessions with CP3 on the court last season, which put him in the 98th percentile for all players per Cleaning the Glass. The only player with a comparable impact over a similar number of minutes was Giannis Antetokounmpo, who won the MVP award for the second straight season.
On the other side, the Nuggets will have to play without Michael Porter Jr. in this matchup. Porter is still a bit of a liability on the defensive end of the court, but his absence will be felt on offense. He’s averaged 19.5 points through their first four games, and he’s done so in an extremely efficient manner. He’s shooting 56.6% from the field and 42.3% from 3-point range, so he has the potential to be one of the best offensive players in the league in the near future.
Overall, our betting model thinks the wrong team is favored in this contest. It thinks the Suns are the better team here, and it has them winning this contest outright at a nearly 75% clip. Considering that the Suns are actually listed as 3.5-point underdogs, our model unsurprisingly loves them against the spread.
