PHOENIX SUNS VS. DETOIRT PISTONS NEWS AND NOTES
The Suns enter this game at essentially full strength. The only player they have listed on the injury report is Jalen Smith, and he’s played just 20 total minutes all season.
The Pistons are also getting a bit healthier. Derrick Rose left their last game vs. the Bucks with an injury, but he is currently listed as probable. Josh Jackson is also on track to return to the lineup after missing each of the past two games.
That said, they are still going to be without rookie point guard Killian Hayes. He suffered a labral tear in his hip Monday vs. the Bucks and is expected to miss a significant amount of time. Hayes has struggled so far this season – he’s shooting just 27.7% from the field and 25.0% from 3-point range – but he’s one of the few things that the Pistons had to be excited about this season. They arguably have the worst roster in the NBA, and Hayes undoubtedly has upside after being selected seventh in the 2020 NBA Draft.
As for the matchup itself, this looks like a huge mismatch. The Suns have gotten off to an impressive 6-2 start this season, and they rank third in the league in Net Rating. The Pistons own the worst record in the league at 1-7, and they have the third-lowest Net Rating. There is simply no reason to expect Detroit to keep this game competitive.
The scariest thing about the Suns is that they’ve been as good as they have been despite getting minimal production from Chris Paul. Their Net Rating has actually decreased by -19.9 points per 100 possessions with Paul on the court this season, which ranks in the 10th percentile for all qualified players (per Cleaning the Glass). Paul was one of the best players in the league in that department last season, so the Suns have massive upside if he starts playing better.
