Phoenix Suns vs. Washington Wizards News and Notes
One of the league’s best defenses goes against one of the league’s best offenses Monday night in Washington. While the Suns haven’t proven defense wins championships just yet, they have shown it certainly wins games. Phoenix’s seven victories have propelled them to the West’s second spot, just a half-game behind the defending champion Lakers. Much of their success is attributed to their play on D. The Suns are second in the NBA, allowing only 104.6 points per game. They’ve really limited teams’ production from the perimeter, giving up a league-low 10.5 three-pointers a night on the eighth-best 3-ball shooting percentage at 35.4 percent. Last season the Suns allowed the 11th most points and had the 11th worst opposing 3-point field goal percentage. A big part of the change has to be the arrival of Chris Paul.
Paul arrived in Phoenix via trade this offseason and brought with him seven NBA All-Defensive First Team honors. The floor general on both ends of the floor is tied for second in the league among point guards in defensive win shares, a defensive stat similar to WAR based on how many wins a player’s defense is estimated to bring. Paul also leads the team with 8.5 assists per game to balance his offense with defense.
The play of Devin Booker has also been huge for the Suns. Booker leads Phoenix with 22 points per game while shooting 48 percent from the field. Like Paul, Booker has also brought it on defense leading the team with 1.1 steals per game and is tied for first among shooting guards in defensive win shares.
On the other side is the spectrum is the offensively strong Wizards. Washington is second in the league in scoring, putting up almost 120 points per game, but it hasn’t equated to wins. After starting the season at 0-5, the Wizards looked like they may turn things around by winning two in a row. But the old Wiz showed up again quickly as the team has dropped their past three. The offense took a bit of a hit as leading scorer Bradley Beal and his league-leading 35 points per game missed last game due to NBA Covid protocol. Beal is expected back following his one-game absence. Washington’s next best scorer, Russell Westbrook, who’s averaged a triple-double most of the year, won’t suit up against the Suns, missing his second game with a quad injury. Unbelievably the Wizard’s third-leading scorer, Thomas Bryant, was also hurt, suffering a season-ending ACL injury in Saturday’s loss to Miami.
As good as the Wizards have been on offense, they’ve been as bad on the defensive end of the floor. Washington is dead last, giving up over 122 points per game while allowing the league’s third-worst opposing field goal percentage. The Wiz are second-last in blocked shots and fifth-worst, pulling down only 33 defensive rebounds per game.
Despite their piling losses, Washington has covered four of their past five games. The Sportsbooks may have caught up with the surprising Suns. After covering in four straight, Phoenix has split their past four against the spread. The high-scoring Wizards have gone over in five of their past six while the defensive-oriented Suns went under in their first six games of the season before hitting the over in three of their past four. The over has also been the play in the past four head-to-head meetings going back to 2018.
