Portland Trail Blazers vs. Atlanta Hawks News and Notes
The Portland Trail Blazers are running through the East and can get one step closer to a perfect road trip when they land in Atlanta on Monday night.
Portland reeled off four straight convincing wins on their current six-game road trip, most recently last night in Boston. The Blazers won their fourth straight by at least ten points handing the Celtics a 129-119 homecourt loss on Sunday.
CJ McCollum’s 33 points tied the game-high with Boston’s Jayson Tatum, while Damian Lillard put up 26 and a game-high 13 assists. Portland’s dynamic duo also got help from Norm Powell.
Powell, who was acquired from Toronto at the deadline, chipped in with 23 points on 53 percent shooting. The former Raptor has provided a nice offensive punch with 22 a game over his past three.
Jusuf Nurkic, who had a slow start before missing two and half months with a broken wrist and struggled upon his initial return, has been producing for Portland as well.
Nurkic put up 14 points and 11 rebounds for his fifth double-double in six games. The Blazers’ center has averaged 17. points and 12.8 boards over that span.
Portland moved back into the sixth and final guaranteed playoff spot in the west but are tied with the seventh-place Lakers record-wise. They also have the same record as fifth place Dallas in a jammed up west.
Atlanta is in a packed middle of a conference as well. The Hawks have the East’s five seed, but their record equals sixth-place Miami. They are 1.5 games back of the Knicks for fourth and a first-round home series advantage and a game up on Portland’s Sunday night victim, Boston.
The Hawks are coming off a 108-97 win over Chicago on Saturday and are getting healthier by the day. Team-leading scorer Trae Young played in his second straight since missing four games with an ankle issue and led the Hawks with a game-high 33 points. It was the second consecutive game of 30-plus for Young, and he set a franchise record in the process. The 22-year-old’s 59th career game of 30 or more is the most by a Hawk in their first three seasons.
Clint Capela, who has been playing through a few nagging injuries, double-doubled with 20 points and 11 boards while adding a pair of blocks. Kevin Huerter returned from a two-game absence to play 25 minutes off the bench, and Bogdan Bogdanovic scored 15 after missing a pair with a hamstring issue.
Portland has covered all four games during their current win streak and is 4-0 against the spread as an underdog. Like many of us, the Hawks don’t seem to like Mondays, failing to cover in their past four games that open the week. Atlanta has covered 13 of 16 as a home favorite and 12 of 15 as a favorite in general. Portland has covered five of six against the Hawks, including their only meeting this season when the Blazers beat Atlanta 112-106 in January.
