Portland Trail Blazers vs. Milwaukee Bucks Predictions and Picks
I’m surprised to see the Bucks laying double-digits in this spot to a competent Portland team. This matchup juxtaposes two superstars in Damian Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo, with one elevating their game and their teammates’ performances while the other is struggling to meet this season’s expectations thus far.
Antetokounmpo is the reigning two-time MVP award winner, but that’s largely due to his ability to be a stat sheet stuffer. Antetokounmpo averaged 29.5 points, 13.6 rebounds, and 5.6 assists last year on his way to 85 first-place votes. His numbers are slightly down this year as he’s averaging 27.8 points, 11.4 rebounds, and 5.7 assists, but the thing to focus on with him is his ability to make shots late in games when it matters most.
For someone who has won back-to-back MVP’s, Antetokounmpo is far down on the list in terms of clutch shooting. According to inpredictable.com, Antetokounmpo is ranked 38th in clutch shooting, whereas Lillard is ranked 23rd in the league. For a more expansive sample size, you can use last season’s clutch stats, and you’ll find that Antetokounmpo was ranked 25th in the regular season while Lillard was fourth.
I’d rather back the team with the better clutch performer, particularly when I’m getting double-digit points.
Portland has been on a nice ATS run on the road (4-0 last four games), and they’ve had success against teams with a home winning percentage above 60%.
The Bucks have not been at their best as a home favorite as they’re just 5-4 ATS in this spot, and they’re 1-4 ATS following a game in which they failed to cover the spread. That trend is live for tonight’s game.
When you put it all together, I’ll gladly take the points with the undervalued road dog here and put my trust in Dame Time.
The Pick: Trail Blazers +10
