San Antonio Spurs vs. Los Angeles Clippers News and Notes
An early-season record-breaking beatdown at the hand of the Dallas Mavericks might have been just what the Clippers needed. After losing to the Mavs by 51 points without Kawhi Leonard, LA has been cruising. The Clip has won three of four games since, including Ws over Portland and against the team with the NBA’s best record at the time. LA took care of business in Phoenix, handing the Suns just their second loss of the year on Sunday. With the victory, the Clippers now jump into the top spot in the West.
Since missing the Mavericks massacre, Kawhi has played very well, putting up 21 points per game in three games, including a 16 rebound, nine assist performance against Utah. While Leonard has been reliable, Paul George has really been the story.
George is leading the team, putting up over 25 points per game. Much of PG’s production has come from beyond the arc. George leads the team with 4.3 triples per game, almost three times as many as any teammate. The Clippers swingman is fourth in the league in threes made, in the mix with sharp-shooters like Steph Curry and James Harden. Paul’s production has helped LA become the second most efficient team from three-point land, shooting 41.7 percent from deep.
The Clip could use some help from their supporting cast on the offensive end, though. Outside of Kawhi and George, the team has no one else scoring 15 or more points a game. In fact, LA has just one other player scoring in double-digits, and that’s Serge Ibaka and his 13 points a night.
San Antonio does not have that same problem with balanced scoring. The Spurs have seven players scoring in double-figures, all seven scoring 12 or more, and have an eighth player averaging nine a night. DeMar DeRozan is again leading the way offensively, putting up a team-high 21.3 points per game. The former Raptor is really filling up the stat sheet, also leading the team with 7.3 assists per game while adding six boards a night.
As a team, the Spurs sit around the middle of the pack in most offensive categories while finding themselves in the bottom half of the NBA in most defensive stats. That sounds about right for a 2-4 team that’s lost four-straight still trying to figure out what they are. San Antonio is about to head into a significant rebuild, and it should be a very up and down season until they trade away key players like DeRozan and perhaps LaMarcus Aldridge at the NBA’s trade deadline.
Speaking of Aldridge, the big man has not played since December 27, nursing a left knee injury. LaMarcus will be a game-time decision, but it’s hard to imagine he’d get many minutes even if he does play. Even when healthy, the veteran was only playing about 25 minutes a game before missing time with his ailing knee.
Despite losing their past four outright, the Spurs have actually covered in four of six games, while LA has failed to cover just twice this season. San Antonio has gone under in three of their past four while the Clippers went below in three of five. The under has also been in play in four of the last five times these two teams met head-to-head.
