Toronto Raptors vs. New Orleans Pelicans News and Notes
The Toronto Raptors will be looking for their second win and first streak of the season as they go for two-straight when they meet New Orleans.
Toronto picked up their first win of the year when they beat the New York Knicks 100-83 on Thursday. The Dinos had gotten off to just the second 0-3 start in franchise history before grabbing their first victory of the season. The opening losing streak all started against these very same Pelicans.
New Orleans beat Toronto in the season opener at the Raptors’ adopted home court in Tampa. The Raps got off to a good start in that one leading the Pelicans by seven at the half, but after being badly outscored in the third, they started the season with the loss. That’s kind of been Toronto’s M.O. early this season as the Raptors have had leads in the second half in all three of their losses this year.
It’s been in the final 24 minutes where things really fall apart for the Raptors. Toronto’s been outscored 173-135 in their second-half losses this year, and as you can tell, their offense really evaporates in the final frame. They are averaging just 45 second-half points in their three defeats—a big reason for their less than impressive offensive numbers.
The Dinos rank 28th, scoring just 101.5 points per game, and have the league’s second-worst shooting percentage at 41 percent. It’s really been their defense doing the heavy lifting this season. Toronto ranks fifth in points against allowing 104 points per game and fifth allowing 43.5 percent shooting from the field. They are also fourth, allowing teams to shoot just 30 percent from behind the arc and in the top-ten in blocks per game.
New Orleans are no slouches on defense either. The Pelicans are giving up the second-fewest points in the NBA at 99 a game and are just one of three squads allowing under 100. The way they are doing it is forcing teams into bad shots, as evident by their fourth-best opposing field goal percentage of 43.4 percent, just a tenth of a percent better than the Raps. At the same time, the two teams’ defenses are very similar, especially in stats, where the Pelicans differentiate themselves is on the glass.
The Pels rank seventh in rebounds per game, pulling down over 48 a night, while the Dinos are down the list at 15. This was evident in the team’s first meeting when New Orleans outrebounded Toronto 45-35.
Like the Raptors, New O has struggled to score. The Pelicans rank 27th in scoring putting up 101.6 points per game, again just a tenth of a point higher than Toronto.
The under has been the play for these two teams this year. New Orleans has gone under in all five games while the Raptors have hit the under in three of four, including their season-opening loss to the Pels. That Pelicans win was the only time New Orleans covered against Toronto in their past four meetings, while the Raps have also met the spread in four of their past six games with New Orleans.
