Toronto Raptors vs. Phoenix Suns News and Notes
A pair of teams many people thought would have had reverse records hook up in Phoenix Wednesday night. The Raptors take their disappointing 1-5 record into Arizona to face the upstart 5-win Suns. Phoenix comes in sitting second in the West, just a half-game back of the surging Lakers, who have won four-straight. The Suns had won four in a row before dropping a five-point game to the Clippers.
Phoenix has been getting it done with defense this season. The Suns allow a league-low 100.6 points per game while allowing the fewest three-pointers at 9.7 a night. The Arizona-based club is also holding teams to just 34 percent shooting from behind the arc, good enough for fifth-best in the NBA.
Much of the top-level perimeter defense comes from first-year Sun, Chris Paul. Paul is a seven-time NBA All-Defensive First team member and brings an intensity and leadership quality the young Suns team sorely needed. You can’t argue with the turnaround with their hot start as Phoenix finished five games under .500 last year.
CP3 has also helped on the offensive end leading the team with 8.3 assists per game. Paul’s facilitating is a big reason the Suns boast seven players scoring in double-figures.
The Toronto Raptors could not have gotten off to a worse start after coming into the season with high hopes. Things just don’t look right in Toronto as the Raptors find themselves one of the league’s worst scoring teams. The Dinos are putting up only 106 points per game, fifth-worst in the league, while shooting a league-worst 41.2 percent, two percent worst than any other team.
They have been better defensively with a No. 8 ranking in opposing field goal percentage while hanging around the top-ten in points allowed. Toronto has five players averaging 1.2 steals per game or better.
The Raptors come into this one after losing two straight, including a 12-point home loss to the Celtics. Jayson Tatum lit up Toronto with a game-high 40 points, while Jaylen Brown scored 19.
Maybe the lone bright spot for the reeling Raptors was the play of Fred VanVleet. VanVleet, who has really been the best player for the team in the early going, put up a team-high 35 while pulling down eight boards with two steals.
The Raptors have covered just once this season, while Phoenix has beaten the spread in four of their past five games.
Phoenix has also covered in eight of their past ten games with the Raptors. The Suns reeled off eight-straight covers going all the way back to 2015 before Toronto hit the spread in their two head-to-head matchups in 2020.
