Utah Jazz vs. Cleveland Cavaliers News and Notes
The Jazz and Cavaliers are two teams heading in opposite directions. Utah comes into Cleveland having won two in a row and four of their past six while the Cavs have lost four of five and six of eight after starting the season 3-0.
Utah has shaken their early-season habit of blowing leads lately. The Jazz blew a second-half lead against the Knicks last Wednesday before holding onto charges from the Bucks and Pistons in their past two.
After starting the season shooting horribly from the field, Utah’s superstar Donovan Mitchell has also turned things around. Mitchell was shooting 34 percent to begin the year but has righted the ship with two games of 50 percent along with rounds of 45 and 47 percent in his past five contests. The former has put up 27 points per game in his past four and continues to lead the Jazz, scoring 23 a night.
The defense has also been vital in Utah’s better play. The Jazz is ninth in the NBA, allowing 108 points per game while holding teams to a top-ten ranking 44 percent shooting from the field. Utah has also been crashing the boards leading the league with 50.6 rebounds per game. A big boost to their defense has been the play of their seven-footer in the middle.
Rudy Gobert is second in the league in both rebounds and blocked shots. Utah’s big man is pulling down 13.8 boards per night along with 2.8 blocks. Gobert has also been part of the Jazz improving their shooting percentage. The 28-year-old Frenchman is eighth in the league among players with a minimum of eight shot attempts per game, shooting 57.5 percent from the field.
Cleveland has fallen on hard times after a quick start out of the gate. The Cavs have had some critical injuries in the form of Kevin Love, Collin Sexton, and Darius Garland. Sexton is leading the Cavs scoring over 25 a game despite missing the past three games, while Garland is the team’s third-highest scorer with 17 points per game but has missed five straight. Love has only played in two games this season and hasn’t seen the court in 2021. Sexton and Garland may suit up Tuesday night, but Love is out until at least February.
The Cavs have been able to stay in games with their defense. Cleveland is tops in the NBA, giving up just 102 points per game. The Cavaliers are also hanging around the top-ten in opponent field goal percentage.
Utah has covered in four of their past six while Cleveland has covered just once in their past five games. The Cavs have hit the under in a remarkable nine straight while the Jazz has gone under in four of seven. Cleveland has only covered once in their past ten games against the Jazz, going back to 2015. The under was the play in six of their past eight head-to-head matchups, with one meeting coming up as a push on the total.
