Utah Jazz vs. Portland Trail Blazers News and Notes
What’s different is the same for the Utah Jazz. Utah has brought back most of the same squad from last season, except a big free-agent signing of a very familiar face.
Derrick Favors played for the Jazz from 2010 to 2019 before getting traded to New Orleans in last year’s offseason. After putting up nearly a double-double average for the Pelicans a year ago, the Jazz decided to bring their prodigal son home. Utah locked up Favors in a 3-year deal to return to an almost identical Jazz team from a year ago poised to make a run to the Finals.
Aside from Favors, it’s the usual suspects for the Jazz. The battle for who is Keyser Söze rages on between superstars Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert. Gobert is the gangster on the defensive end of the floor. Gobert led the league with 916 rebounds, was tied for fifth with two blocks per game, and third in the league with 4.2 defensive win shares.
Mitchell led the Jazz with 24 points per game and really stepped up his game in the playoffs last season. The former 13th overall pick went off for an NBA-best 36.3 points per game in the postseason bubble.
Another man who went bonkers in the bubble was Damian Lillard. Lillard averaged 37.6 points and 9.6 assists during the eight seeding games, shot 43.6 percent from three-point range and led the Blazers to a 6-2 record. Almost on his play alone, Portland was able to slide into the final playoff spot.
The Blazers will again lean heavily on their all-star in their perpetual fight to make noise in the tough Western Conference. Lillard led Portland in scoring in each of the past five seasons. He’ll continue to get help from CJ McCollum, who was second in team scoring at 22.2 points per game. The Blazers are hoping big man Jusuf Nurkic will be back to his old self.
Nurkic suffered a gruesome broken leg injury in 2019 and was held to just eight regular-season games last year. If not for the delayed season restart, Nurkic would have missed the entire season. The seven-footer averaged a double-double for the Blazers in the bubble, putting up 16.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game.
Portland added defense to their already high-octane offense. The Blazers acquired Robert Covington and Derrick Jones Jr in the off-season. Covington led the NBA playoffs with 2.5 steals per game last year after posting 1.6 per game in the regular season. Jones is an athletic defender who averaged 1.5 steals and one block per 36 minutes last year.
Both teams are relatively healthy, with Bojan Bogdanovic, Mike Conley, and Joe Ingles banged up for the Jazz but expected to play. Jones Jr. is dealing with a back problem but will suit up and start for Portland.
