Washington Wizards vs. Philadelphia 76ers News and Notes
The Washington Wizards will head back to the site where their five-game losing streak to begin the season was born as they met the Philadelphia 76ers for the second time this year. Washington lost 113-107 in Philadelphia in the season-opener for both squads. Since then these two teams have gone in different directions.
Philadelphia has been playing some of the best basketball in the NBA this season. The 76ers sports the league’s best record at 6-1 after disposing of the Charlotte Hornets for the second time in two days. Philadelphia beat the Hornets 118-101 on Monday, two days after handing Charlotte a 15-point loss in Philly.
The 76ers have been nearly unbeatable at home and will look for their 20th straight win in Philadelphia when they welcome the Wizards. Philly is a perfect 4-0 at home this season and is putting up nearly 115 a game in their friendly confines. The Sixers rank seventh in homecourt scoring and sixth with a 48.1 field goal percentage at home. They are also third, pulling down over 50 rebounds per game at the Wells Fargo Center.
Joel Embiid is putting up MVP type numbers leading the Sixers with 23.2 points and 12.3 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game. Embiid actually sits third in the league in rebounding and is seventh in blocked shots. Philly’s big man is also playing on the perimeter, hitting a 3-pointer a night while also adding one steal per game.
The Sixers have been getting a nice balanced attack with five players putting up 12 or more points per game, including the team’s second-leading scoring, Tobias Harris, who’s averaging nearly 20 a night.
Philly is also doing it with D. The 76ers are second in the league, giving up just under 102 points a night while holding teams to a league-low 41.5 percent shooting. They also rank eighth in steals per game while hanging around the top-ten in blocked shots.
The Wizards are on a bit of a roll of their own. Sure, Washington can’t boast a 4-0 home record or six wins on the season, but after starting the year 0-5, the Wiz have won two in a row, looking for their first three-game win streak since December 2018.
Washington comes in following a one-point victory in Brooklyn on Sunday after the Wizards defended both Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving from hitting game-winning shots. Before that, the Wiz demolished Minnesota 130-109 to get this opportunity at a rare three-game streak.
Bradley Beal has been playing the best ball of his career and is a huge reason why the Wizards are surprisingly the league’s third-highest scoring team. Beal is putting up a career-best 30.6 points per game with him trailing only Steph Curry and James Harden for the NBA-lead. The Wizards swingman is scoring almost 10 points more than his career average. A big reason for the offensive success could be the addition of their new point guard.
Russell Westbrook facilitates the Wiz, leading the team with 11.8 assists per game, just one-tenth away from the league lead. Westbrook is also getting it done on the glass leading the team with 11.3 boards per night. Washington’s PG is in the top-ten in rebounding and is the league’s top rebounding guard, by far. Add his 20.6 points per game, and Westbrook is averaging a triple-double and while early looking to accomplish the feat for the second season of his career.
As well as Washington can score is about as bad as they are at defending the basketball. The Wizards are allowing the second-most points in the league, giving up 120 per game. They are also fifth-worst, allowing opposing teams to shoot 48.1 percent from the field. The Wiz have surprisingly defended better on the road allowing six points fewer away from home.
Washington has covered in their past two after failing to hit the line in their first five games, while Philly has covered in four straight and five of six.
These are two teams on the opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to totals. Philadelphia has gone under six of their games this season, while the Wizards have hit the over in five of their past six.
Washington has covered four of their past five head-to-head meetings with the Sixers while the under hit three of their past four games.
