Mitch Moreland will be staying put in California, but not with the San Diego Padres. Today, the Oakland Athletics signed him to a one-year deal worth $2.25 million according to Chris Cotillo of masslive.com.
Moreland spent the second half of last season with the Padres after the Boston Red Sox traded his expiring contract following a blistering start.
The Mississippi native hit .328 with eight home runs and 21 RBI’s in 22 games with Boston but cooled off with the Padres — hitting only .203 with two home runs and eight RBI’s in 20 games.
Perhaps a return to the American League will suit Moreland better, considering that it was the only league he played in before joining the Padres. He should fill be able to split some time between playing first base and filling in as a DH.
FanDuel Sportsbook lists the Athletics as the favorite to win the AL West at +135, +100 to win the pennant, and +2500 to win the World Series.
