Blue Jackets’ Joonas Korpisalo is Out for the Season
The Columbus Blue Jackets announced Tuesday they will be without goaltender Joonas Korpisalo for the remainder of the season. Korpisalo suffered the season-ending lower-body injury in the third period of Columbus’ 4-3 loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday. Just a day ahead of his 27th birthday, the Finnish netminder completes a disappointing 2021 campaign where he went 9-13-7 with a 3.30 goals-against average and an .894 save percentage.
While the loss of Korpisalo could be disappointing to fantasy owners currently battling in the playoffs, it is beneficial to those who have Elvis Merzlikins rostered. If you’re not one of those GMs, Merzlikins is still available in about 40 percent of leagues should you need a goalie to plug a hole for the postseason. Merzlikins, who played in 24 games to Korpisalo’s 33, should get the bulk of starts in the Jackets’ final six games and has put together a solid season. The Latvian netminder sports a 6-12-3 mark with 2.94 GAA, .910 save percentage to go along with a shutout for the last-place Blue Jackets.
Merzlikins gets his first start as the undisputed number one goalie when Columbus hosts the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday. The 27-year-old will lead his squad as a -152 moneyline favorite at the FanDuel Sportsbook and can pull his team even with the Wings in the Central with a regulation victory over Detroit.
As a heavy favorite to pick up a win against an equally bad team like the Wings, Elvis is also a decent play at FanDuel with a $7000 price tag.
