Following the Carson Wentz trade’s aftermath to the Indianapolis Colts, ESPN’s Adam Schefter shed some light on the chaos surrounding Wentz and former head coach Doug Pederson. During a radio appearance on 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia, Schefter stated that Wentz and Pederson were not speaking to one another for weeks. By his estimation, Schefter stated that this went on for about eight to ten weeks.
It’s unclear which party was responsible for the alleged friction, but if true, this is likely more damaging for Wentz.
There were already questions about Wentz’s leadership circling in the media. Football is a team game, and the quarterback should possess some leadership skills and embody their coach inside the locker room. That means communicating even when things aren’t necessarily going your way.
If you’re a Colts fan, you have to wonder about Wentz’s frailty and ability to handle adversity. Let’s not forget that it was Pederson who guided the Eagles’ to their only Super Bowl with backup quarterback Nick Foles after Wentz went down with an ACL injury. While Wentz did lead the Eagles to an 11-2 start before the injury, he was reduced to being a spectator during the postseason.
Only time will tell if Wentz’s reunion with his former coordinator and current Colts head coach Frank Reich will be enough to turn his career around. As we’ve often witnessed in sports, sometimes one’s physical talent isn’t enough to mask their character flaws.
