Browns Fans Are Going to Love Baker Mayfield’s NFL MVP Odds
Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns have looked nothing like they did last year. The team is off to a 4-1 start, and the notoriously turnover-prone Baker Mayfield has only thrown 4 interceptions on the season. He had thrown 8 (and lost 1 fumble) by this time last year.
His hot start has already caused his MVP odds to skyrocket, as Mayfield (+5000) is currently tied for the eighth-best odds to win the award, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
Ironically, Mayfield is currently tied with division-rival Ben Roethlisberger, who also has his Pittsburgh Steelers sitting at 4-1 on the year.
It’s interesting to see Mayfield as high as he is on this list, however, as he hasn’t been asked to do a whole lot by new head coach Kevin Stefanski. With 172 rushing attempts on the year, Cleveland is currently the league’s most run-heavy team. As a result, the Browns are averaging the fourth-fewest passing attempts per game (30.8), and Mayfield has only topped 220 passing yards once this season.
The fact that the oddsmakers rank Mayfield as highly as they do is encouraging, though. It likely suggests that they view the Browns as a legitimate contender going forward.
If Cleveland can maintain this hot start, and Mayfield can increase efficiency, he has a real chance to vault into the top-five MVP candidates in the near future. That could start happening as soon as Week 6, when Mayfield will look to bolster his resume as the Browns hit the road to face the Steelers.
