Buffalo Bills vs. Kansas City Chiefs News and Notes
Josh Allen was busy last week against Baltimore. The team as a whole had 12 rushing attempts to Allen’s 37 passing attempts, and 7 of those 12 rushing attempts were also his. He will have to show up again to compete with Pat Mahomes and company. Luckily, the Bills are a team that has the weapons to counter: Stefon Diggs, John Brown, Dawson Knox, and Cole Beasley all picked up right where they left off, catching passes with relative ease from Allen.
The Chiefs had two scares last week: a feisty Browns team playing them a lot closer than the posted spread implied, and Pat Mahomes getting concussed in the second half. All signs point to Mahomes playing in this game, and with that, the most lethal offense in today’s NFL returns for the AFC Championship: pass-catchers Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, Mecole Hardman… Clyde Edwards-Helaire was inactive last week, and it was a footnote for most people given how potent this offense is! Add all that to Andy Reid realizing he has to be innovative with his play-calling to match a high-powered Bills offense, and this game should have some fireworks.
In Buffalo, cornerback Tre’Davius White, cornerback Levi Wallace, as well as safeties Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer are in for a rough day, but having White be elite should allow him to somewhat contain Hill, providing the ability for the Bills to scheme up ways to stop Kelce up the seam and Hardman on long bomb tosses. Defensive linemen Jerry Hughes, Ed Oliver, and Mario Addison will have to ensure that they provide an adequate pass rush to get home to Mahomes in order to ensure the Chiefs don’t end up dropping 35+ points on them.
The Chiefs will have their hands full as well trying to contain the Bills. Their best hope is to have their star defensive linemen Chris Jones and Frank Clark try to pressure Allen, and failing that, have ascendant secondary players Tyrann Mathieu and L’Jarius Snead do their best to slow Buffalo down. It will be a long day at the office for Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, and he will have his work cut out for him.
Buffalo Bills vs. Kansas City Chiefs Prediction and Picks
The Bills +132 moneyline is my favorite pick. Look, it’s difficult sometimes to look at the Chiefs playing football and wonder how anyone could conceivably bet against them. The only other team in the NFL that I believe can hang with the Chiefs and win a one-game series is the Buffalo Bills. Taking three points in a game with a projected total of 53 points as opposed to making the extra 30 cents on the money line seems like a sucker’s bet. Similarly, I like the over 53. I’m just not betting an under in a game with the two most explosive offenses and innovative play-callers facing each other.
