Cleveland Browns vs. New York Giants News and Notes
Fresh off a heartbreaking loss to the Ravens on Sunday Night Football in front of a national audience, the Browns will travel to New Jersey to rebound against head coach Joe Judge’s Giants, who are somehow in the thick of a playoff hunt for the NFC East title.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield has had a bounce-back year at quarterback this year under new head coach Kevin Stefanski and is supported by what is undoubtedly the best 1-2 punch rushing attack in football with running backs, Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. Mayfield may have lost star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to injury this season, but pass-catchers Jarvis Landry, Rashard Higgins, and Austin Hooper have filled in admirably. I’d be remiss not to mention a totally retooled offensive line that has allowed Mayfield, on most plays, to seemingly have the time to have a cup of coffee before deciding where to throw the ball.
You likely know the stars of the Browns defense: linemen Myles Garrett, Larry Ogunjobi, Olivier Vernon, and Sheldon Richardson will be providing constant pressure on Daniel Jones all game. In the secondary, cornerback Denzel Ward and safeties Andrew Sendejo and Karl Joseph will be blanketing opposing wide receivers.
The Giants have had a mid-season resurgence of sorts and find themselves very much in the playoff hunt. After losing star running back Saquon Barkley to a season-ending injury in Week 2, the offense has rebounded on the backs of backup running back Wayne Gallman and pass-catchers Evan Engram and Darius Slayton. Quarterback Daniel Jones remains talented yet frustrating at times due to his inability to rein in turnovers.
The real story out of the Giants is the emergence of the defense: they’ve played at a borderline elite level since about mid-way through the season. While former Panther cornerback James Bradberry has played at an All-Pro level all season, he’s been joined by linebacker Blake Martinez and safeties Logan Ryan and Jabrill Peppers in quietly making the Giants into a very formidable defense.
Cleveland Browns vs. New York Giants Prediction and Picks
My betting analysis on the game? I believe with Giants quarterback Daniel Jones hobbled and a Giants team that showed its issues offensively against the Cardinals by struggling to score, combined with a defense that has played very solidly since mid-season, and a Browns team that wants to run the ball and gash opposing teams with Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt, that the under 44.5 and taking the 4.5 with the Giants is the play in what should be a defensive slugfest (the Browns are no slouches defensively either, featuring Defensive Player of the Year candidate Myles Garrett). There may also be some value on the under as the last thing in people’s minds from the Cleveland Browns was combining with Baltimore on Sunday Night Football to put up 87 points.
