LOS ANGELES RAMS VS. GREEN BAY PACKERS NEWS AND NOTES
The Goff cold-weather performance that will be on everyone’s mind came back in Week 14 of 2018 against the Bears. The then-third-year QB went 20-of-44 for 180 yards and four interceptions en route to a 15-6 loss on Sunday Night Football.
The Bay Area native will get a high of 33 degrees on Saturday, which seems less than ideal for him.
On the other side, a fellow Northern California QB has been able to embrace the frigid temperatures that come with winter football at Lambeau Field. Aaron Rodgers has a combined regular-season record of 40-15 in December and January.
The cold weather has certainly done nothing to slow down the favorite to win his third MVP award. In five games this season since the start of December, Rodgers has 15 touchdowns to just one interception, completing 76.6% of his passes for 1,199 yards.
In Goff’s final five regular-season games, he has had dissimilar results — and the weather in Seattle wasn’t even that bad! Goff finished the regular season with a 65.6% completion rate over his final five games to go along with four touchdowns to five interceptions.
Adding a broken thumb to already below-average performance is difficult, I’ll admit. But his 9-of-19 outing for 155 yards against Seattle didn’t necessarily inspire confidence.
What has inspired confidence in the Rams’ offense? Cam Akers.
The rookie out of Florida State ran for 424 yards over the Rams’ final five regular-season games, although it was for a 4.5 yards-per-carry average that is good but not great. Akers followed that up with 131 rushing yards on a 4.7 average per carry last weekend against the Seahawks.
It’s no secret that the Packers’ defense tends to struggle against the run, but it ranked in the middle of the pack (18th) in Rush DVOA this season. Green Bay even fared well against Derrick Henry in Week 16 by getting out to a big lead and making the Titans apparently forget about their stud back for a bit.
The Packers’ defense ranked 15th in Pass DVOA but did have Pro Football Focus’s highest-graded cornerback in coverage this season in Jaire Alexander. Chandon Sullivan is solid in the slot, which will be key against Cooper Kupp at likely less than 100% due to a knee injury, while Kevin King will be someone the Rams look to target in the passing game if they can get Robert Woods on him.
Really, there’s nothing about the Packers defense vs. Rams offense matchup that jumps out at you on paper. The other way around? Oh, baby.
Davante Adams is surely going to get shadow coverage from Jalen Ramsey most of the game in what will be the best WR-CB matchup of the season. Adams has been spectacular this season, while Ramsey is coming off two-straight weeks of shutting down D.K. Metcalf while he was covering him (Ramsey was not covering the Seahawks second-year star on either of his touchdowns).
The Rams’ defense ranked fourth in the regular season in Pass DVOA and third in rush DVOA. Rodgers, Adams, and running back Aaron Jones are in for their toughest test of the season. The conditions are sure to play into their favor.
Also, playing into their favor: Green Bay’s offense is the best in the NFL. The Packers’ regular-season offense ranked first in Total DVOA, first in pass DVOA, and fifth in rush DVOA while leading the NFL with 31.8 points per game.
This game will be decided by the quarterbacks. Can Rodgers evade Ramsey and Aaron Donald, two of the best defensive players in the NFL, and score more than an offense led by Goff or Wolford?
I like the chances of that happening. Aside from a flukey performance in Tampa Bay that saw Rodgers throw interceptions on back-to-back possessions after a hot start to the game, no one has been able to contain Green Bay. I’ll take them as home favorites to host the NFC Championship Game at Lambeau.
