Los Angeles Rams vs. Seattle Seahawks News and Notes
Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll “Let Russ Wilson Cook” for eight games throwing to wide receivers DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett, as well as tight ends Jacob Hollister, Greg Olsen, and Will Dissly, and it was beautiful to watch as Seattle blew the doors off opposing defenses through the air. Tigers like Carroll don’t change their stripes, however, so now Seattle is back to running the ball first and foremost: Chris Carson, Carlos Hyde, and Deejay Dallas are all now the foundations of the offense, establishing the run and the line of scrimmage.
For the Rams, head coach Sean McVay’s offense stays the same, regardless of who is playing quarterback: an offense that starts with outside zone rush attempts with backs Cam Akers, Darrell Henderson, and Malcolm Brown, and builds on it with play-action passes to 1a/1b wide receivers Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp, in addition to tight ends Gerald Everett and Tyler Higbee. Quarterback Jared Goff is attempting to come back from a broken hand to play in this game, but if he can’t go, former two-time AAF player of the week and private equity associate John Wolford will suit up as the signal-caller.
The “Legion of Boom” is gone, but the Seattle defense, once a sieve, has woken up in the back half of the season: the additions of edge Carlos Dunlap and safety Jamal Adams seem to have helped shore up that side of the ball. The strength is still the front-seven, led by long-time star linebackers Bobby Wagner and KJ Wright. Combining them with Adams would make even Derrick Henry fearful to rush up the middle of the defense. Free safety Quandre Diggs and cornerback Shaquill Griffin provide pass coverage support to allow the Seahawks pass rush to pin their ears back and get after opposing quarterbacks.
One could argue that Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley has been the best coordinator in football: sure, having defensive end Aaron Donald and cornerback Jalen Ramsey helps, but one could argue no defense has been more consistently rock-solid game over game. Supporting defensive players cornerback Darious Williams, tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day, and linebacker Samson Ebukam have also garnered Pro Bowl consideration.
Los Angeles Rams vs. Seattle Seahawks Prediction and Picks
My betting analysis on the game? Under 42.5 for the total is the strongest bet. Seattle is playing at home with a defense that has climbed from being the subject of jokes at the beginning of the season to top-10 in most metrics by Week 17. The Seahawks are back to rushing the ball first, and even if they try to go through the air with Russ, Ramsey seems to be DK Metcalf’s kryptonite. The Rams are either starting a backup or Jared Goff with a broken hand. Their defense, one could argue, has been one of the only elite ones all season. The game should finish 17-16 or somewhere near there. I like the Rams +3.5: with a low-projected total and an in-division game, I get the 0.5-point hook on the Rams? Sign me up.
