Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Cincinnati Bengals News and Notes
- QB: Brandon Allen (knee) – OUT
- LB: Logan Wilson (ankle) – OUT
- S: Brandon Wilson (hamstring) – QUESTIONABLE
Brandon Allen being out is fairly crucial here for Cincinnati and will play a part in the line when it is set by the bookmakers. Ryan Finley will get the nod as the starter on Monday night for the Bengals. As for Logan Wilson, not a starting linebacker but one who did make his mark each game within the rotation, and his ability to create some turnovers like his two interceptions on the season will be missed. Safety Brandon Wilson has been the return man at times for the special teams unit, which is where most of his contribution comes. It will be something to keep an eye on as to who takes his place if he ends up missing out on the Monday night matchup.
- G: Kevin Dotson (shoulder) – OUT
- RB: James Conner (quadriceps) – QUESTIONABLE
The loss of Kevin Dotson shouldn’t be too impactful of one since he has started in just two games this season and mainly serves as a backup to the starting offensive linemen. As for Conner, his loss shows in the numbers — 155 rushes for 663 yards and five touchdowns is a far shout from the next closest on the roster. His availability will be important to both the comfort level of Roethlisberger as well as the offense as an entire unit.
- Bengals are 1-4 against the spread in their last five games.
- Bengals are 4-1 against the spread in their last five home games.
- Steelers are 4-1 against the spread in their last five road games against teams with losing records.
- Steelers are 10-4 against the spread in their last 14 games in the AFC North.
- The under is 5-0-1 in the last six Steelers’ games where they are favored.
Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Cincinnati Bengals Predictions and Picks
The Cincinnati Bengals will host the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football as they look to spoil the potential first-round bye the Steelers are seeking to claim in the NFL Playoffs. Cincinnati is coming off of losses in their last five, including a 36-10 defeat to the Steelers in Week 10. The Steelers started the season as hot as anyone, accruing an 11-0 record before falling in their last two games to the Washington Football Team and the Buffalo Bills.
The spread is currently sitting at 14.5, favoring Pittsburgh with a -108 price. This marks just the second time this season where a road team has been favored by more than two touchdowns, the other coming when the Saints covered and defeated the Broncos 31-3 in Week 12 when wide receiver Kendall Hinton was announced the Denver starter after all rostered quarterbacks were put onto the high-risk COVID-19 list.
The size of the line has ballooned from its opening 13 points mostly due to public betting as well as the loss of Brandon Allen for Cincinnati in this one. Ryan Finley started three games for the Bengals a season ago but was found on the losing side of all three outings. Pittsburgh’s offense has struggled as of late and has really never gotten any serious footing in this season, even with their streaky start. The Steelers offense ranks 26th in the NFL in yards per play and is trending downward by half a yard in their last three games. Laying more than 14 points to a team that struggles to get yardage and move the ball down the field is a risky wager. Take the contrarian side here and grab the two touchdowns with the Bengals.
The Pick: Bengals +14.5
The total for this matchup resides at 40, with no juice to either side, one of the lowest we have seen while analyzing these Monday night games. Correlating it with the spread, it seems that most bookmakers are expecting a low scoring affair that still sees Pittsburgh covering by a nearly two-touchdown deficit, something that is difficult to do when points are not expected to be plentiful.
It’s hard to disagree with the total here as both teams rank in the bottom seven in yards per play. Two reeling offenses are not going to be able to produce much in this one in terms of offensive firepower. The total has dropped from its opening 41.5, but don’t let that scare you off here. Take the under and expect a sloppy one in Cincinnati.
The Pick: Under 40 (-110)
The Bengals ran a running-back-by-committee backfield in their previous game against the Cowboys, and it’s hard to see something different happening on Monday night. Giovani Bernard had the short end of the stick with just three rushing attempts for eight yards and three catches for 15 yards, a combined 23 yards in the loss. With FanDuel having Bernard’s rushing and receiving total at 41.5 yards, it’s difficult to see the running back nearly double his production from last week versus a much scarier defense. Take the under on Bernard’s rushing and receiving total as he will likely struggle in this one.
Steelers tight end Eric Ebron has seen his role increase with Pittsburgh in the last few games. The former Lion and Colt notched two consecutive games of 11 targets and seven receptions and has etched himself a solid starting role as Roethlisberger’s number one tight end. He has found himself in the endzone four times this season, as well as receiving a two-point conversion a week ago. Take the tight end on a flier as the first time touchdown scorer as Pittsburgh is more likely of the two to strike first.
The Picks: Giovani Bernard under 41.5 rushing and receiving yards (-110) and Eric Ebron first touchdown scorer (+850)
