Ron Rivera Is Optimistic Alex Smith Will Start on Sunday

The NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports that Washington head coach Ron Rivera is optimistic about quarterback Alex Smith’s ability to start in Week 17. While Rivera intimated that it would come down to how Smith can run the offense in practice this week, this is actually a bullish sign. If the decision about Smith playing is more about his functionality with the offense than the physical nature of the injury, then that certainly seems to be a step in the right direction.
There has never been a question in regards to Smith’s ability to run the offense.
After all, he’s done the job better than any other Washington quarterback that’s lined up under center over the last few years. Smith returned after almost a two-year absence due to a gruesome leg injury. While he was the third quarterback on the depth chart at the start of the season, he quickly worked his way back to being the starter. He even helped guide Washington to four consecutive wins, including an upset over the previously undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers.
One look at the current line in this game should tell you all you need to know about Smith’s status for Sunday. At FanDuel, Washington is currently a 1.5 road favorite against the Philadelphia Eagles. A win would give them the division and clinch a playoff berth, whereas a loss would end their season.
