Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Washington Football Team News and Notes
“Tom Terrific” has the Bucs streaking into the playoffs. Tight End Rob Gronkowski has found his form the last few weeks, and wide receivers Antonio Brown, Chris Godwin, and Mike Evans have all given Brady tons of options on any given play to find the open man. The Bucs’ offensive line has taken a massive leap forward this year, as three of the five starting linemen were named to Pro Football Focus’s most improved list (in the offensive lineman category).
First-year offensive coordinator Scott Turner has the Football team playing up-tempo, spread-out football and taking advantage of speed, size, and quickness mismatches wherever he can find them: quarterback Alex Smith has been able to throw to ascendant Alvin Kamara-clone Antonio Gibson out of the backfield, and reliable pass catchers Terry McLaurin and converted quarterback tight end Logan Thomas downfield.
The Tampa Bay defense, run by Todd Bowles, is made in his image: a brutal front-four that stops any opposing rusher in their tracks and strikes fear into opposing quarterbacks (defensive linemen Ndamukong Suh, Jason Pierre-Paul, and Shaq Barrett), as well as a back-end filled with big-bodied cornerbacks and safeties (Carlton Davis and Jamel Dean). I haven’t even mentioned their linebacker core of Lavonte David and Devin White who could be considered the best tandem in the league at the position since Patrick Willis and Navarro Bowman played for the Niners.
The best position unit in this game, however, belongs to the defensive front-seven of the Football Team. They’ve stockpiled first-round draft picks for years on the front-seven, and it’s gotten them one of the fiercest pass-rushes in all of football under coordinator Jack Del Rio. Presumptive Defensive Rookie of the Year Chase Young, Montez Sweat, Daron Payne, and Jonathan Allen all make up possibly the best front -four in football, while veteran Ryan Kerrigan provides a veteran presence in the linebacking group. Safety Landon Collins provides some thump on the back end for anybody who happens to get past the front-seven.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Washington Football Team Prediction and Picks
My betting analysis on the game? The strongest play here is over 45 on the total. Talking heads will obviously point to the under as the way to go because of the defenses here, but in the last month, Tampa has averaged 37 points per game. The Bucs have the weapons to attack the weaker Washington secondary, as well as an elite offensive line to try to stymie the Football Team’s front-seven. Quarterback Alex Smith has given the Football Team life: since Week 8, the Football Team has topped 20 points in every game but two. The Football Team will likely have to throw a bit to keep up with the Bucs, so there’s a good chance that a fourth-quarter garbage time touchdown sends this game over the total. The Football Team +8.5 is also the side here: the 8.5 points is about 2 points too high for any level of comfort of Smith hitting his receivers for a back-door touchdown to lose by 6-7 points and cover.
