Washington Football Team vs. Philadelphia Eagles News and Notes
Now, this is the way to close out a season! The NFL has to be happy having the final game of their 2020 season be for the NFC East division crown. It’s really simple, if Washington wins, they are in. If they don’t, the winner of the Giants and Cowboys afternoon meeting is the division champ. Whoever wins the East will make NFL history. No team that started the season at 2-7 has ever made the playoffs. Dallas, New York, and Washington all once had 2-7 records this year. One of those teams will break the 0-for-258 streak. That’s right, 258 other teams have started the season with that record in NFL history, and all were eliminated from post-season play.
While Washington probably doesn’t want such a record or to be one of the rare division winners to have a losing record but they’ll take a playoff spot at 7-9 since they surprisingly have this chance. Despite the record, Washington has actually played quite well down the stretch. The Football Team won four of their past six to put them in the driving seat in the NFC East. Washington did all their damage with Alex Smith at the helm as he led the team to four straight wins. After Smith went down with a calf injury, Washington dropped their past two, setting up this do-or-die situation in the NFL’s season finale. Well, the city of Washington woke up to some good news on Saturday.
Smith will be under center for this crucial game against the Eagles. What a relief for The Football Team, who averaged just 14 points per game in his absence. During their four-game win streak, Smith led Washington to nearly 27 points a game. Since taking over quarterback duties in mid-season, the former 49er has put up 265 yards per game before exiting with the calf injury against San Francisco in Week 14.
While the team will definitely welcome Smith back with open arms, they know the defense butters their bread. The Football Team has allowed the fifth-fewest points this season at just 21 per game. They rank third against the pass allowing 198 yards through the air, and are fourth in total yards allowed. They rank sixth in the NFL with 44 sacks and seventh with 14 interceptions. Both factors give them the league’s third-best opposing QB rating of 85.2.
Jalen Hurts will try to buck the trend and go out on a high note from his successful first season under center for the Eagles. Hurts breathed life into a zombie-like Philly offense under Carson Wentz. Despite the 1-3 record, Hurts has revitalized the passing game putting up a pair of 300-plus yard performances while also scoring a huge upset over the Saints. The Eagles’ quarterback is also doing it with his legs putting up 67 rushing yards per game as part of Philly’s ninth-ranked run game.
Hurts will have his work cut out for him against a tough Washington defense with a patchwork offense. Multiple offensive starters, including running back Miles Sanders, receivers DeSean Jackson and Alshon Jefferey, in addition to tight end Dallas Goedert, will not play in this one.
The Eagles defense is nothing that strikes fear into opposing teams even on a good day sitting in the bottom half of the league in points and yardage allowed. It will be even tougher to stop Washington with a defense also missing several starters. With not anything to play for, it seems hard to imagine how a makeshift Eagles squad stays motivated for this game.
Washington beat Philadelphia 27-17 in the season-opener for their only other meeting of this year.
