NFL DFS GPP Recap: Week 5
NFL DFS GPP Recap: Week 5
Remember that one marketing ploy by the DFS industry? No, not the one about the accountant in his underwear, but the one that pokes holes in season long leagues and the fact that injuries can derail an entire season. They should start playing that ad again because this week was disastrous for millions of fantasy owners that have to deal with the aftermath of the Jamaal Charles injury. Football's entertainment value has taken a deep hit this season with injuries to Ben Roethlisberger, Tony Romo and now Jamaal Charles. Don't let it get you down though, because as long as the injuries don't happen after rosters lock, you can fight your way around it!
Here's a list of guys that didn't get injured!
|Devonta Freeman||1RuTD, 153 RuYDs, 44RecYds, 7 Rec||35.7||29.2|
|Doug Martin||1RecTD, 2RuTD, 123 RuYd, 3 Rec, 35RecYd||39.8||35.3|
|Justin Forsett||1RuTD, 121 RuYds, 49 RecYds, 4 Rec||30||25|
|Antonio Gate||2RecTd, 9 Rec, 92RecYds||30.2||25.7|
And…here's a list of other guys that also stayed away from the injury bug.

So What Happened This Weekend?
I'm not really sure what to expect from the NFL anymore, so I made no assumptions coming into Week 5. Even still, I'm left with a murky picture about what actually happened this week. Some of the players we most expected to contribute, contributed and a few that we expected domination from, basically forced us into a shower cry.
Below I've included a small table with some of the highly owned players that either made us jump for joy or punch the wall.
Ownership levels taken from DK Millionaire Maker and FD Sunday Million.
DK Points & Ownership
FD Points & Ownership
|Le'Veon Bell||25.7 & 36.8%||20.7 & 35.1%|
|Julian Edelman||25 & 28.9%||20 & 30.6%|
|Jamaal Charles||9.4 & 29.7%||8.9 & 22.5%|
|Rob Gronkowski||10.7 & 27.0%||8.7 & 23.9%|
It's safe to say that much of the public had the same mindset when picking players this week. If you used the top-two guys and somehow missed the duds, you probably had yourself a pretty decent week - especially if you paired them with anyone from the top-performers table.
Who Made The Difference?
I'm not going to say that Devonta Freeman solely made the difference this week, although, once again, if you had him in your lineup you were off to a great start. Instead, I think Doug Martin was the true difference maker. Martin has been seeing the lion's share of touches out of the backfield in Tampa and also has the ability to catch the ball. The Jaguars defense isn't exactly stout and Martin had a solid price industry wide. Given the fact that you might be trying to separate from the field a bit, noting that Jamaal Charles and Le'Veon Bell were going to be incredibly highly owned, using Doug in your GPP lineups wasn't a bad decision. And well, it worked out…really, really, well.
Martin found himself at 5.4 and 3.6 percent owned respectively in the Millionaire Maker and the Sunday Million and rewarded owners with over 35 points on both sites. He was the weeks only three touchdown scorer and one of the only position players to even record two, making him almost a must have at the top of tournament leaderboards. For that reason, he's the difference maker this week.
To Gronk or Not To Gronk…
Often as DFS players, we find ourselves having to make one decision that will largely affect our lineup construction and our team performance. A lot of times, that decision, especially in tournaments, is whether or not to pay up at a particular position and take the “chalk play.” At tight end, common knowledge points to the fact that Rob Gronkowski is the chalk play and as a result, regardless of his price, we can observe inflated ownership percentages on Gronk every single week. Above, I noted the ownership levels of Gronk from this week's two main millionaire tournaments at 27, and 23.9 percent respectively.
If Gronk would have hauled in three touchdowns, as he's capable of doing, more than a quarter of lineups would have been profusely happy. However, by not paying up, and differentiating yourself from the field this week at this position, you were able to gain a huge advantage if you went with any of the following.
I'm going to be continuing this segment weekly in hopes of producing a larger piece on this deeper into the NFL season as the striking contrast in quarterback play has been a particularly interesting note thus far in the NFL season.
Below I've once again gone through the quarterbacks used in the top 20 lineups of both of the major tournaments on FanDuel and DraftKings.
Sunday Million, FanDuel : Five different quarterbacks in the top 20 lineups. Four less quarterbacks than last week: Tom Brady, Philip Rivers, Tyrod Taylor, Eli Manning, Josh McCown. Difference in highest and lowest score = 12.62 (Josh McCown – Tyrod Taylor)
Millionaire Maker, DraftKings: Seven different quarterbacks in the top 20 lineups. The same amount of quarterbacks as last week: Blake Bortles, Josh McCown, Eli Manning, Philip Rivers, Sam Bradford, Tom Brady, Tyrod Taylor, Difference in highest and lowest score = 15.86 (Josh McCown – Sam Bradford).
There is one note that I want to make in this section about the difference in point totals varying between the two main sites. Keep in mind, that DraftKings uses a three point bonus for quarterbacks that throw for over 300 yards. Typically, those that are near the top of the leaderboard are ones that have eclipsed this mark, slightly inflating the difference between the top and bottom, and also the difference in point total from DraftKings to FanDuel.
Congratulations to all the winners from this week, and to the losers, sorry!
