FedEx Cup Desperation
Henrik Stenson ($11,000 on DraftKings): According to DailyRoto’s value optimization tool, Stenson is the fourth-ranked value play this week. The reigning champion has been hit and miss this season, but he still leads the Tour in greens in regulation and ranks ninth in Par 4 scoring. His putter is the only thing that can hold him back, but even with a below average putting performance, he can easily crack the Top 10. A few putts made from outside 15 feet could mean back-to-back wins for Stenson at Sedgefield.
Joaquin Niemann ($9,700): The 19-year-old Chilean sensation just made the cut at the PGA Championship last week. Although he didn’t play well over the weekend, he should be feeling confident after his first made cut at a major. Birdie fests work just fine for Niemann, as he ranks second on Tour in birdie or better percentage behind only Dustin Johnson. If that’s not enough Niemann also ranks 10th in good drive percentage, second in greens hit, and fifth in Par 4 scoring. Niemann has already logged four Top 10s in his first 12 PGA starts. The next step forward for him would be his first win on Tour.
Jason Kokrak ($7,900): I like Kokrak’s form as of late. In his last four starts he has finishes of T3, a missed cut at the British Open, T12, and T19 at the PGA last week. Kokrak made just six bogeys and no doubles all last week, so he’s staying away from the big numbers beautifully. His skill set should work well at Sedgefield. Kokrak ranks 31st in birdie or better percentage and falls inside the Top 50 in good drive percentage, greens in regulation, and Par 4 scoring. He had a solid showing at this site last season, shooting four rounds in the 60s on his way to a T16 finish.
Johnson Wagner ($7,500): Wagner has two pieces of upside going for him. He hasn’t missed a cut since the first week of June and he has a great recent track record at the site. In 2017, Wagner shot 14-under for the first three rounds before a final round 74 saw him drop from fourth to T24. The year before that Wagner finished T5 at this event. Wagner is one of the best putters on Tour, ranking 18th in strokes gained and ranks similarly in Par 4 scoring (21st). Wagner is a safe pick to make the cut and while he most likely won’t win, his ceiling is somewhere in the Top 5 or 10.
Ricky Barnes ($6,800): In Ricky Barnes’ last four trips to Sedgefield he has finishes of T16, T20, and T24 sandwiched around a missed cut. Barnes is a deep sleeper this week and as it stands he ranks 174th in the FedEx Cup Standings, which means he pretty much has to finish inside the Top 2 to make the playoffs next week. I certainly wouldn’t bet on that happening, but Barnes will be aiming at flags all week with nothing to lose. Surprisingly, he ranks 20th in birdie or better percentage, so he should be able to outplay his price tag by a good amount.
Seamus Power ($6,800): Seamus Power is another guy who needs to make something happen in order to move on to next week. Currently sitting at 123rd, Power cannot afford to move backwards this week. He ranks 15th on Tour in strokes gained: putting, so with push coming to shove, Power will need to get that flatstick working in order to reach the Northern Trust next week. Seamus Power may not be Tiger Woods, but if you watched last Sunday, Tiger was basically willing his ball into the hole with superior concentration. I’m hoping Power can get into a similar zone to punch his ticket to the playoffs.
