TEXAS STATE’S LOWE: A MUST-GRAB CFFB PLAYER
It’s not often that one can brag and boast about a player from his alma mater, so consider this week’s wire report a special one.
The hottest free agent available is Texas State RB Robert Lowe, who has put up 50.8 points in his last two games, including a 31.8 Fantasy point performance in last Saturday’s win over Wyoming, a game played in a mishmash of weather conditions that resulted in a three-hour delay. I mentioned Lowe in last week’s wire report, stressing that his value will increase now that the Bobcats enter Sun Belt play this week against Louisiana-Lafayette. Texas State loves to run the ball, and now that coach Dennis Franchione (who got his 200th career win last week) has a workhorse in Lowe, he is a must-grab in deep leagues.

It’s Lowe or bust for Texas State, which ranks 111th in passing offense, but a respectable 64th in rushing. Those numbers figure to climb this week, as Louisiana-Lafayette allows 179 yards per game on the ground at an average of 4.8 yards per carry. The road gets better for Lowe the rest of the month, as Louisiana-Monroe (195.6), Georgia State (218.3), and South Alabama (150.5) all give up rushing yards at a generous rate. Lowe could be this year’s Kasey Carrier; Carrier was still available in a lot of deeper leagues at this time last year before owners (like me) caught wind of his production. Carrier ran like a first-round pick the second half of last season, as he became a lethal pickup that propelled a host of teams (like mine) to the top of the mountain.
So take the advice of someone who attended Texas State when it was (and still is, at least to me) Southwest Texas State back in the mid-1990s. Ah, sweet memories.....the 12th floor of Jackson Hall (which we nicknamed the Skydome).....Draft Choice Sports Bar.....a 7:1 women to men ratio....summers by Strahan Coliseum. Good times indeed. The nostalgia of the 20th anniversary of my transfer to SWT/TSU complete, let’s take a look at some of the other hot players available:
*Brandon Connette, QB, Duke: The Blue Devils are off this week, which may be a good time to quietly scoop up a QB who has put up a staggering 89.95 Fantasy points over the last two weeks.
*Caleb Herring, QB, UNLV: Like Connette, Herring is off this week, yet provides a Fantasy quandary. Herring is listed as a RB in most leagues, but has played under center the last two weeks. If your league is lax regarding a non-QB putting up QB-like numbers, don’t hesitate to pick up Herring.
*Justin Davis, RB, USC: The freshman is proof Lane Kiffin wasn’t completely clueless, as Davis amassed 30.2 Fantasy points in last week’s wild loss at Arizona State. Tre Madden will be the lead back, yet Davis’ potential is too good to be ignored. He’s also on a bye week and (again) worth the stealth pickup.
*Donnel Pumphrey, RB, San Diego State: Adam Muema is so 2012, as injuries have made him one of the season’s biggest busts. Pumphrey went 19-167-3 in last week’s win over New Mexico State (34.7 Fantasy points), which means the Aztecs are more inclined to see what more the freshman can do.
