Laila Ali On Mayweather Vs. McGregor: ‘Don’t Be Pissed If It Ends Too Fast’
There are a lot of definitive opinions that have been given by boxers, and other people with shreds of common sense, that the upcoming fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor is mostly just an exercise in testing the public's willingness to pay for just about anything that we slap a famous face on.
However no one has expressed the true absurdity of the whole situation as well as Laila Ali. Her boxing credentials come from being raised by the greatest of all time and then embarking on her own remarkable career - finishing 24-0 with 21 knockouts as one of the best women to ever do it.
Ali spoke with For The Win ahead of her third time hosting the ESPN Sports Humanitarian Awards on July 11, and shared these pearls of wisdom in regards to the Mayweather vs. McGregor fight:
“I just think that fans need to just know that it’s for fun,” Ali said with a chuckle. “Easy for me to say – I’m not going to be in the ring. But you’ve got a UFC fighter, who has no boxing experience, fighting one of the best fighters in the world.
“So if you buy the fight, you know, don’t be pissed if it ends too fast or it wasn’t competitive. I’m going to be asking, ‘What did you expect?'”
YESSSSSS. Guys she didn't even try to tell you that it's not going to be a good fight. She skipped right to "if you think it's going to be a good fight then you're stupid and you get what you deserve." It's just a legendary answer. It's like we learned nothing from watching Holly Holm completely destroy Ronda Rousey's will to live.
Ali went on to say that if it's convenient and easy and if she has nothing else going on and doesn't have to pay for it, then she'll watch the fight. Incredible. Essentially, Ali is willing to put as much effort into see this fight as she'd put into watching a re-run of Dirty Dancing on Lifetime. We should all be so wise.
In case you still think McGregor has a shot, here's a recent Instagram video of Mayweather training:
I know I'm not the same fighter I was 20 years ago, I'm not the same fighter I was 10 years ago... As a matter of fact, I'm not the same fighter I was 5 years ago,I'm just an old legend putting in work in 16 oz gloves #TMT #TBE @mayweatherpromotions
