10 Reasons Why Miguel Montero Is The Best Athlete On Twitter
Most athletes on Twitter have a schtick. They tend to be witty, sarcastic, silly, outrageous or sometimes downright insane. Miguel Montero's Twitter account may be one of the most entertaining of them all right now, and he's not really any of those.
He's just downright adorable.
Montero was a two-time All-Star during his nine seasons with the Diamondbacks before he was traded to the Chicago Cubs in the 2014 off-season. The Venezuelan-born catcher finds nothing in the world to be more exciting or a greater honor than playing for the Cubs. After watching him catch Jake Arrieta's no-hitter on Sunday night, his Twitter account was brought to my attention and my life has not been the same since. His undying love and gratitude for the uniform he wears, combined with his admirable (yet overall successful) attempts to tweet in English, make him just super lovable.
So here are a handful of reasons why Miguel Montoya is one of the best athletes on Twitter. I promise that by the end of this you will be a new follower.
1. He loves being a Cub SO much.
He loves being a Cub more than you probably love anything. It almost makes me want to be a Cubs fan. In fact, it inspires people who are already Cubs fans to love them even more.
I feel you, bro.
2. He has the absolute best signature hashtag of all athletes on Twitter, hands down.
#WeAreGood. It started with a simple tweet; a straightforward, elegant hashtag. Plus it just works for everything, as you will see.
It works for rain delays.
It works for pre-game tweets.
It works for settling arguments.
It can even accommodate a rare double appearance by the same hashtag within one tweet.
Everybody's loving it.
3. He can admit when his team just isn't getting it done, but always believes that they will bounce back.
And of course those opportunities are perfect for a bonus #WeAreGood. He doesn't need to deflect blame. He just takes the loss and moves along.
4. He's very self-aware and is perfectly willing to make jokes at his own expense.
Oh my god I love him so much. This guy just has zero ego, it's so beautiful.
5. He absolutely cannot be heckled.
He is a man of the people so he wants to respond to as many tweets as possible, and even when they are clearly inflammatory he just rolls with it. Nothing rattles this dude.
6. He is always pumping up his teammates.
He especially loves to talk up rookie Kyle Schwarber. If you check out his feed, he makes multiple references to how much he likes him. So he's clearly ready to step up as a mentor to the younger players and build them up rather than haze them.
In love with him yet?
7. He knows his body.
That second one might also qualify as another example of how he is Twitter's most unheckle-able athlete.
8. He'd rather talk about how great the Cubs are than put others down.
9. He genuinely enjoys interacting with his fans.
I imagine that it must be hard for Cubs fans to believe in anything anymore. There is no one alive that's every seen them win a World Series, and every time they manage to eek out a sliver of hope for a season, it blows up in their faces. They deserve Miggy. He is the shining beacon of optimism that they need.
10. He believes in himself and his team no matter what you say.
I would pay so much money to watch Donald Trump try to get Miggy worked up on Twitter. In fact, some one may just want to set up a televised debate. No joke, I think he could be the thing that makes Trump's gross, orange head finally explode.
