2014 ALDS: Orioles' Steve Pearce Stretches A Double Into A Single
Last week Steve Pearce's home run made Derek Jeter's game-winning hit in his last Yankee Stadium at-bat a reality. This week he's in the playoffs for the Orioles. But in the bottom of the seventh, with Baltimore nursing a one-run lead, Pearce smoked a pitch into the left field stands. Or at least he thought so when he took his time getting out of the batter's box. Turns out he hit the Max Scherzer pitch hard but too low and it bounced off the wall. And there to field it was his former Astros teammate, JD Martinez, who bare-handed the carom and hurled it into second, cutting down Pearce by a good five feet.
While you have to like Pearce's guts, trying to make up for watching your hit bounce off the wall by running for a base you can't make is the way you get DFA'd, not a ring. Thankfully for him, JJ Hardy did go yard for his first postseason homer in the next inning. Orioles 4, Tigers 2, top of the eighth. C'mon, Baltimore. Win one for Steve!
