Aspiring Pilot Mookie Betts Flew AL East Rival Chris Archer To All-Star Game
Mookie Betts is an outfielder and exceptional hitter for the Boston Red Sox, the sworn AL East enemies of pitcher Chris Archer's Tampa Bay Rays. Betts is also the guy who hit the lead-off homer off of Archer during Sunday afternoon's game, which the Rays eventually went on to win 3-5.
That's all a bit of context to describe how surprising it would be if say, Archer hitched a ride as Betts' passenger in the jet he co-piloted from Tampa to Miami for All-Star weekend. AND YET...
Yes, apparently a demoralizing home run at the start of the game wasn't enough to convince Archer to pass up the chance at quick and efficient transportation to the All-Star festivities on Sunday night. While admittedly still mad, he was quite complimentary of the guy co-piloting the plane - which is definitely the right tone to take with someone who has your life in their hands.
It was actually probably a necessary bonding experience for the two. While the young stars are rivals for 363 days out of the year, they are teammates for the All-Star Game. And while home-field advantage in the World Series is no longer at stake, bragging rights are as important as ever.
