Baseball Player Spits In Own Helmet, Puts Helmet On, Leaves TV Analysts In Hysterics
The Diamondbacks' Wily Mo Pena hit a walkoff home run last night to give his team a 6-4 win over the Indians. Pena's got himself a nice comeback story - before this year, he hadn't played in the big leagues since 2008 - and moments like this could help prolong it. And when the MLB network broke down Pena's at-bat, no one cared about the home run.
That's not to say they didn't care about anything Pena did, though: they simply chose to focus on a gross thing he did before the at-bat...i.e. spit into his helmet just before putting it on. It's hard to say exactly why Pena did this - we can't imagine any way it might give one a competitive advantage unless the pitcher sees it and is so disgusted he gets distracted. Of course, given the results of Pena's at bat, maybe that happened. What we know for sure happened: the studio team went a little nutty.
That really has it all - the Mr. T impression/all-around excessive excitement from Harold Reynolds, and the ensuing combination of disgust, confusion, and boisterous laughter from the crew (led by Reynolds). Safe to say, Pena needs a few more homers without the helmet-spitting to start to live this moment down.
