DeflateGate Will Literally Never Die: Buffalo Edition
The Pawtucket Red Sox - in a display of solidarity with the Patriots - announced that they will be holding a “Free Tom Brady” event during which allowed anyone named Tom or Brady to get in for free.
Free. Tom. Brady. Get it?!
Well you better believe that the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons are getting in on that action by hosting their own “Keep Tom Brady Suspended” Night, because god forbid they just let this thing die a slow, New England death. According to the Buffalo News, the event is supposed to take place on June 11th, the night after the PawSox event.
"In response to the Pawtucket Red Sox's "Free Brady" promotional night slated for June 10, the Buffalo Bisons have countered with a "Keep Brady Suspended" night...
Buy one, get one free tickets will be available for any fan who brings a fully inflated football to be donated to area youth football programs..."
Apparently the press release also included the stipulation that anyone named "Tom" or "Brady" will be admitted into the stadium but not permitted to watch the first four innings of the first game. That's clearly a poor attempt at humor, as it is both unreasonable and unenforceable. Classic Buffalo.
The press release also stated that there will be videos on the Bisons' massive scoreboard that will focus on "some of sports' most notorious cheaters." How fun!
Listen, if you're sick of hearing about DeflateGate from anybody then join the club. Because of Tom Brady's never-ending, somewhat pointless court battle to clear his name, we as a football nation have had to have this "scandal" shoved down our gullets for about 13 months too many. Having said that, it is still a thing whether we want it to be or not. So if the Boston-area teams want to have fun with it then more power to them. But that's where it ends.
Doing a "Keep Tom Brady Suspended" night in Buffalo is beyond pathetic. A baseball team in northern New York having a night dedicated in any capacity to NFL star Tom Brady is just kind of sad. They're basically admitting that the best thing about being a Buffalo sports fans is their invented rivalry with Boston. They have zero ties to the Patriots or Brady or the DeflateGate scandal. This would be like the PawSox having a "Remembering Jim Kelly's Four Failed Super Bowls" night. It's not cute. It's just a misplaced cry for attention.
At the end of the day, whether Tom Brady is suspended or not, New England sports fans think about Buffalo two days out of the year; and those are the two days when the Patriots (usually) kick the living crap out of the Bills. The rest of the 363 days of the year, Buffalo might as well not even exist as a place where sports happen.
That may be harsh, but it's so utterly true. Let's hope the good people of Buffalo and fans of the Blue Jays farm team are able to enjoy their night dedicated to Tom Brady, because it will probably be their biggest crowd of the season.
