Do Not Adjust Your iPhone; Those Joe DiMaggio Updates Are For Real
Things have been going pretty sour for the New York Yankees in the early goings of the 2016 season. The proud heritage of 27 World Series championships behind them, the Yankees currently sit in the cellar of the AL East Division with a mark of 19-22. Injuries have played a part in the downfall of the Bronx Bombers, necessitating many call-ups from their minor league system.
However, last Sunday, users of the the MLB At Bat app might've been led to believe that the Yankees made some sort of groundbreaking call-up from the minors...in that they promoted a player who has been deceased since 1999.
It turns out, the MLB app is celebrating the Yankee Clipper's legendary hit streak via a series of push notifications, which went unannounced before making their debut last weekend. Ironically, last weekend the Yankees were indeed hosting "CWS"...the Chicago White Sox, of course...which only added to the confusion, as did the present tense wording of the notification. The fact MLB kicked off the campaign completely unannounced was also a source of shock to many baseball fans, who couldn't possibly imagine the Yankees' roster situation was so dire they were calling up legends from the past.
Needless to say, Twitter, where response has been mixed, reacted accordingly....
Adding to some of the consternation is the fact that there's no way to toggle the notifications on or off, which could get annoying if you're not a Yankees fan. I can't imagine Red Sox fans are too pleased about not being able to see Sox scores without also having to see an icon from their biggest rival tally up hits to this day. At the end of the day, the MLB's intentions behind the idea were very good, but a few flaws in execution, like the surprise aspect, kept it from being a perfect promotion. For the record, DiMaggio's streak ended on July 16, so expect these notifications to extend throughout a good portion of the summer.
But, hey, it could be worse people...can you imagine if the At Bat app tried to do this for Cal Ripken Jr's consecutive game streak?
