Fan Tries To Catch Foul Ball Away From Eric Chavez, Elicits Memories Of Steve Bartman (UPDATE)
The New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles played quite the epic Game 3 last night, as Raul Ibanez tied the game with a pinch-hit solo home run in the 9th and blasted the game-winning jack in the 12th.
Earlier in the game, Yankee fans were confronted with a rather disturbing omen when Eric Chavez caught a Manny Machado pop out right near the seats along the third base line in the top of the 7th inning. The catch was more difficult than it had to be because one fan in a bubble jacket, seated in the front row, attempted to catch the ball as well.
In his defense, it doesn't appear that he even realizes how close he is to Chavez, or that Chavez could even make a play on the ball. And, as soon as he sees that Chavez stole the ball away from him, he retreats his hands in horror at his near Yankee betrayal. And, sensing the pending retribution, he slinks down in his chair to hide from sight.
You'll notice around the :38 second mark that all of Yankee Stadium erupts in boos - the replay had just been shown on the video board. As our own Dan Fogarty notes (who was at the game), "They really booed the shit out of bubble jacket guy." Chavez did make the catch, so no harm, no foul. But had Chavez dropped the ball and the Orioles blown the game wide open, we're not quite sure how bubble jacket guy would have made it out of the stadium in one piece.
Also, do take note of the lady on the right who watches the entire scene unfold with her mouth completely agape - first terrified, then excited, then mortified.
The only good thing to come out of this was that Steve Bartman almost made a new friend.
UPDATE: According to tipster Max, our near ball thief is Michael Brosnan, brother of Tim Brosnan, MLB Executive Vice President of Business. Way to shame the family, guy.
