For Some Reason, Baseball Broadcasters Decided To Lose Their Minds This Weekend
Bizarre behavior all around is the only way to describe the weekend in baseball broadcasting, from Braves analyst Joe Simpson going berserk on-camera to Rays third man Todd Kalas putting on a hand puppet.
The former was featured heavily throughout the Braves' broadcast Saturday night, as Simpson (speaking to a Braves watch party back in Suwanee, GA) combated the mild-mannered nature of play-by-play announcer Chip Caray and turned MLB into WWE:
Simpson's performance garnered some interesting reactions from the Twitterverse:
@FriedBasballATL The open from today's #Braves broadcast was from a drunken office party. It was never supposed to air.
@TLanceB Joe Simpson just turned heel announcer.
That wasn't quite as strange as Kalas (whose father is the late, legendary Phillies & NFL Films announcer Harry Kalas) strapping on a hand puppet of unofficial Rays mascot DJ Kitty:
Eagle-eyed viewers were quick to notice:
Of course, Kalas is no stranger to disguise:
