Heath Bell Is Very Lucky This Pop-Up Slide At The All-Star Game Didn’t Blow Out A Knee
San Diego Padres relief pitcher Heath Bell was looking for a way to make a name for himself during last night's All-Star game in Arizona, but it's safe to say that the Padres organization would have preferred that he found a different way to do it.
Upon having his name called in the 8th inning, Bell took off from the bullpen in a full sprint, only to perform a pop-up slide just before reaching the mound.
Perhaps the craziest part about the whole slide was that it wasn't improvised or a spur of the moment idea, but instead was something that Bell had been practicing in the weeks leading up to the midsummer classic.
"Yeah, I practiced," Bell said of his slide.
"On my lawn. Last week," Bell said. "I'm not going to do something stupid… well, I'm not going to do something stupid without preparing myself."
The reaction to Bell's slide caused quite the reaction from his fellow All-Stars on the field, such as Brandon Phillips, who looked shocked, and Starlin Castro, who looked confused. The slide even seemed to impress Giants closer Brian Wilson, who has made something of a second career out of similarly-weird stunts.
