Here’s A Fun Little Awkward Moment From Pete Rose’s Press Conference
In case you missed it on Monday, Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred denied Pete Rose's appeal to overturn his lifetime ban, and subsequently, his much-deserved enshrinement in Cooperstown. Maybe Manfred simply couldn't resist the urge to deny Rose's appeal for the third time -- baseball people really like doing stuff in threes -- or maybe it was because their face-to-face meeting in October didn't give him the sense that the MLB's all-time hits leader really understood why betting on baseball was wrong. He laid out his reasoning in a very boring, very long letter (which you can read, here).
Here's our take on it, in case you want a way shorter, way funnier **list** of reasons why Rose wasn't reinstated. Lists are great, right?
On Tuesday, Rose held a press conference in Cincinnati -- the city where he coached and played for the better part of three decades -- and much like his short-lived reality show, it was confusing and uncomfortable and unintentionally hilarious.
Our favorite moment came when someone in attendance began screaming "Let him in!" immediately after Rose complimented the people of Cincinnati for being so great. The enthusiastic fan went on for a solid 10 seconds, at which point you can hear a weird barking noise, then a mysterious thud we presume to have been said chanter getting pile-driven into a steel chair.
Sucks that he won't be getting a Hall of Fame induction ceremony, because wow, that'd be a complete shitshow.
