Is that the Iron Islands or the Steel City?
The City of Pittsburgh became King's Landing last week, as the Pirates announced their starting lineup with an animation that would cause even Ned Stark to turn in his grave (uh, spoiler if you somehow are reading this and haven't actually watched season 1). The video featured the likes of PNC Park, Heinz Field, and even the Allegheny Incline rising from the ground, much like Dreadfort, Riverrun, and Harrenhal. As the city skyline neared completion, player head shots were featured in front of an Iron Throne made of baseball bats. A cool animation, genuine authenticity, and even the soundtrack, made any Game of Thrones fan in attendance that night appreciate the sport and the television show just a little bit more.
Now, I'm sure you'll agree with me (GoT fan or not), that this opening was insanely entertaining. Watching the Roberto Clemente bridge appear just like Pyke, or asking yourself who would win in a duel, Andrew McCutchen or Jaime Lannister? Tossing around the idea that if any baseball player were to sit on the Iron Throne, it would be Felix Hernandez (c'mon, the guy's nickname is King Felix). Whether you're a fan of the show, the sport, or neither, you have to at least appreciate the creativity put into the project.
As an avid GoT fan, and boasting a die hard following for the black and gold, I give this video a well deserved appointing to the King's Hand. With all the hype surrounding the Penguins closing in on the Holy Grail, and the Steelers projected to travel far into the postseason, who knows, perhaps the Steel City may be closer to the throne than we think.
