July 29 MLB DFS Picks: Brian McCann Is The Top Catcher
July 29 MLB DFS Picks and Analysis
It's another exciting night in MLB DFS as both DraftKings and FanDuel are offering six figure prize pools! Drew Dinkmeyer of the DailyRoto Daily Fantasy Rundown shares some picks and analysis to help get you started with your lineups.
Brian McCann (NYY) – McCann and the Yankees (fresh off 21 runs) get to face Colby Lewis in Arlington tonight. Lewis has allowed a .350 wOBA and 36.4 percent hard hit rate to LHBs since 2013. McCann has posted a .326 wOBA and .195 ISO against RHP during that same span. McCann is vulnerable to the shift but against fly ball pitchers, his power gets highlighted. Lewis has been able to generate just a 34 percent GB Rate against LHBs. This is a plus matchup for McCann and puts him inside our Top 20 overall hitters for the evening slate. He ranks a few places ahead of Russell Martin in our model and the slight price savings over Martin makes him a stronger play.
Clayton Kershaw (LAD) – The Athletics rank 19th in wRC+ against and the lineup got weaker with the loss of Ben Zobrist. They don’t strike out much (16.8 percent) but Kershaw’s incredible strikeout skills (33.9 percent) trump any concerns there. Kershaw’s posting the best xFIP of his career (1.89) as he’s managed to build on his K Rate and GB Rate (52.7 percent) while maintaining an elite walk rate (five percent). He hasn’t earned the same results as last season (2.51 ERA vs. 1.77 ERA) but he’s improved upon almost everything that he can control (more swinging strikes, strike outs, ground balls, etc). The question when analyzing is Kershaw in DFS isn’t his greatness, but his price tag. It’s hefty, but I ultimately still think it’s worth it. It’s a small slate without a lot of depth at the pitcher position and the secondary options come with risk (Ross comes with command issues, a negative park shift, and a suddenly lefty heavy Mets lineup while Tanaka has to pitch in Arlington). In cash games, I’d make Kershaw a staple, while I think his exceptionally high ownership will make him a compelling fade in tournaments.
