Magic Johnson Sure Sounds Like He Wouldn’t Mind Owning The Dodgers One Day
The Los Angeles Dodgers are, as you probably know, a mess. They're owned by Frank McCourt, a guy with no business owning a team, someone whose stewardship has literally turned the franchise into a joke. Sooner or later, McCourt will own the Dodgers no longer. But who will step up and attempt to restore the luster to one of baseball's proudest franchises?
Well, it's not out of the question that Magic Johnson would be involved. Johnson recently took part in a Q & A session with Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times. At one point during the discussion, Plaschke pretty much begged Johnson (who used to hold a minority stake in the Lakers) to buy the beleaguered team. And while Johnson - for the most part - remained mum since the team does still have an owner (all the better not to risk any potential deal down the road), he made sure to say how much he admires the Dodger brand...and that in the purely hypothetical situation the team was up for sale, "of course" he'd look into it.
We should note that this kind of talk doesn't make anything inevitable, or even likely, or even ultimately feasible. Magic would have to find the right group, they'd have to decide it was worth it to bid, and if all that happened, they'd have to put in the best bid. But sure sounded intrigued enough to try. And keep in mind, this is on top of him telling Plaschke at this same event that he's currently at work trying to help bring the NFL back to Los Angeles. If he managed that and helped the Dodgers usher in the post-McCourt era on top of leading the Lakers to five titles as a player, he might as well just start wearing a crown and get carried around in one of these, because what else will he have left to do?
