Well, Mariano Rivera ended speculation about whether his career was over pretty quickly, didn't he? When it came out last night that he'd torn his ACL in a freak batting practice incident, it was only natural to wonder if the 42-year-old would ever pitch again. When he fought back tears while addressing reporters after the diagnosis, the possibility that he'd reached the end of the line seemed even stronger.
"I'm coming back. Write it down in big letters. I'm not going out like this."
We don't know about you, but we're awfully glad to hear an injury didn't cut Rivera's brilliant career short. We suspect you feel the same way, given the near-universal sadness expressed at his injury last night. So if Rivera wants us to write it down in big letters he'll be back, well...
Mariano Rivera will be back.
... we're inclined to oblige. So there you go: Mariano Rivera will be back to torment hitters with that cutter again. For further proof of just how set he is on coming back, witness the interview below with ESPN's Pedro Gomez. In this case, at least, Rivera was as reluctant to see his career meet an untimely end as fans were. And that's going to make for a pretty cool moment whenever he's back on the mound.
That kind of determination has to make the Yankees feel good. Why, it's almost enough to forget that now they have to play without Mariano Rivera.
