Michael Kay Calls In To Dan Le Batard’s Show With Great Yogi Berra Stories
Don't expect the tributes to Yogi Berra to conclude anytime soon -- the man was such a legend that it's going to takes days to recount all the interesting stories. Case in point: Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay (a nephew of actor Danny Aiello, by the way) called Dan LeBatard's show this morning and let loose with some Yogi knowledge, with at least three great stories.
In one, he told of how Yogi, Billy Martin, Whitey Ford and Mickey Mantle all invested in land in Florida for their eventual retirement. Three of them eventually sold off their lots, but Yogi held on to his. "Not as an investment," said Kay, "But just because he held on to it."
Later, when Disney World was in the planning stages, Yogi found that his plot was smack in the middle of the development. They couldn't build the park without his land. "Yogi made a truckload of money from that," Kay said. "But that was just Yogi. Everything he touched turned to gold."
There's also a touching story about Phil Rizzuto that Kay related, that says more about Berra than anything. See and hear it above.
