Modern Technology Did Not Save This Umpire From Being Knocked Out Of Sunday’s Indians-Giants Game

Umpires have worn protective masks since the days of Old Hoss Radbourn, but sometimes they aren't quite enough, as Hunter Wendelstedt learned Sunday night in the 2nd inning of the Indians-at-Giants matchup:
Wendelstedt managed to finish the inning, but left the game afterward leaving third base ump Jerry Layne to take over behind the plate. This led to controversy later in the game, when Orlando Cabrera's apparent foul ball down the left field line was called fair and earned the Cleveland infielder a double.
It didn't matter in the end, as Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner rebounded from his disastrous previous start to strike out 11 and lead San Francisco to a 3-1 win.
