Report: Brewers Trade Carlos Gomez to Mets – His Original Team

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Mets are ready to trade for Brewers OF Carlos Gomez on Wednesday. The deal is reportedly to have the Brewers send Gomez to the Mets, his original team, and the Mets will trade back to them shortstop Wilmer Flores and injured right-handed pitcher Zack Wheeler.
Gomez’s career started with the Mets back in 2007, and he was part of another huge trade, when the Mets sent him (a top prospect at the time) to Minnesota in exchange for starting pitcher Johan Santana.
In the past week or so, the Mets have added Gomez, Juan Uribe, Kelly Johnson and reliever Tyler Clippard, proving they are serious about making a big run in the National League playoffs. They’re currently 1.5 games behind the Nationals in the NL East division before Wednesday’s games finished.
Milwaukee, on the other hand, is adding a shortstop with plenty of pop – to go with their shortstop with speed to spare (Jean Segura), and they’re gambling that Wheeler can turn into a front-line starter. Wheeler isn’t expected to pitch in the majors again until the middle of 2016.
From a Fantasy Baseball perspective, this is a little of a drop in value for Gomez, although, he’s having a relatively disappointing Fantasy season anyway. He has just over 280 at-bats, but he has eight home runs and seven stolen bases, with a batting average 20 points below where it was in 2013 and 2014.
