According to the Philadelphia Daily News, Phillies 1B Ryan Howard was engaged in a legal fight with his family over the control of his finanaces. He was involved in a legal battle that included suing his twin brother Corey and his parents after alleging that they conspired to defraud the first baseman.
Howard’s suit against Corey Howard is actually a countersuit because Corey was suing Ryan after he took back control of his finances. Apparently, Ryan Howard had watched the ESPN 30 For 30 documentary, “Broke,” which talked about athletes that lost money because they had entrusted family members with their business affairs, like Howard did.
“By late 2011,” according to Ryan’s counter-suit, “Ryan had become concerned with whether Corey and his other family members were really working to protect his financial interests or were attempting to enrich themselves at his expense.”
The lawsuit was solved out of court last month, and no further lawsuits have been filed. Howard and his family reached an undisclosed settlement out of court.
