Summer In America: A Minor League Baseball Team Will Have A Zombie Night
The landscape of minor league baseball promotional events is a cluttered one. All across this great land of ours, teams with names like the Brevard County Manatees and the Newark Bears host special events like "World Record First Pitch Attempt Day" and "Britney Spears Baby Safety Night" in an attempt to get you, the fan, to come watch them play minor league baseball.
But one team stands head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to crazy promotional events: the St. Paul Saints, who count actor Bill Murray as one of their part owners (he's also listed as "team psychologist" on their website). Like Murray, the Saints' promotions are charmingly quirky.
Take tonight's promotion, for example. Billed as a "Welcome to Zombieland," the stands will be "taken over by zombies" during the Saints game against the Gary Southshore RailCats according to the Pioneer Press. The event (where fans will get a free hat and raffle ticket!) is also part protest: the construction of a light-rail along St. Paul's University Avenue is "killing" small businesses. Hence the Zombie theme.
