T-Pain Performed The National Anthem Sans Auto-Tune And It Was Exquisite
T-Pain, the artist known best for popularizing the use of Auto-Tune in rap and hip hop in the mid-2000's, sang the National Anthem at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday night. Of course most people are not aware of T-Pain's vocal ability because his popular music has been purposefully pitch corrected to give his songs their signature sound.
Yet armed with just a microphone and his voice, T-Pain delivered his soulful take on the Star Spangled Banner without over-riffing, messing up the lyrics, or dragging it on for five minutes; and to everyone's delight, it was glorious.
Nailed it! Sure there were a couple flat and sharp notes, but his fantastic falsettos were placed in just the right spots to make up for it. Not everyone can have the pitch perfect angelic voice of National Anthem-extraordinaire Marlana Van Hoose, but he gave an enjoyable, artistic, earnest performance.
Celebrity renditions of the Star Spangled Banner continue be to one of the rare instances in which previous ideas or notions of an artist's talent seem to fly out the window. The best singers on the planet often fall flat on their faces. It's actually pretty incredible. The good ole U.S. of A's National Anthem is Kryptonite for singers. So many great voices have tried for Whitney, but end up more like...well...Goat Whitney.
Christina Aguilera is considered one of the great female vocalists of her time, but her over-stylizing and inability to remember the lyrics made her most famous National Anthem performance unenjoyable at best.
Even the great Michael Bolton couldn't get it right! Ugh...you're better than that, Michael.
And yet here comes T-Pain, who no one even realizes can actually sing, and he nails it. He had to have known that most people there weren't expecting what they were going to get, and still he managed to avoid any nervous flubs or unnecessary detours. Here's hoping that his performance nabs him a second chance to show off his vocal chops once the playoffs roll around.
In the mean time, enjoy this bonus acoustic T-Pain treat.
