Texans 21, Cardinals 4? Astros Make Playoff Case With Blowout W
On Friday night, the Houston Astros' run total was high than starting pitcher Dallas Keuchel's win total for the entire 2015 season.
When you consider that Keuchel won his 20th game last night, that's downright impressive.
In their quest to clinch the second wild card in the American League, or possibly the AL West division title, the Astros' hitting blasted off for 21 runs, a score more likely out of the city's NFL franchise, the Houston Texans. The tally was more than enough to defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks by a 21-4 final.
With the win, Houston moved to two games behind their in-state rival, the Texas Rangers, for first place in the AL West, and preserved a one game lead for the final league wild card over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, who are in the midst of a four game set with Texas.
Keuchel pitched well to earn his 20th win of the season, tops in the AL, throwing 6 innings, allowing 6 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 3. It was Houston's offense, however that stole the show.
The clear offensive star for Houston was SS Carlos Correa. The rookie shortstop ended the long evening 3-for-4, driving in four runs. With a single, triple (the first of his career), and home run, all of which led to Houston runs in some way shape or form, a double short of a cycle. Correa was lifted for Jonathan Villar in the late stages of the game, and Villar only added to the whopping total with an RBI of his own in the 8th.
Other "hitmen" for the Astros included OF Colby Rasmus (2-4, 3 RBIs) and 3B Luis Valbuena (3-4, 2 RBIs). Six Astros recorded multiple RBIs, and all but two batters in the lineup (one of which being the pitcher Keuchel) had a hit.
Long eliminated from playoff contention, the loss ensured the Diamondbacks will finish with a non-winning record for the 4th consecutive year. They'll have a chance to play spoiler for the Astros once again, as the teams continue their interleague final on Satuday night. First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 PM EST.
